AGAINST (+) This report is the European Parliament’s response to the European Commission’s report on competition policy in 2017. The report concentrates on issues such as competition policy as a tool to guarantee the proper functioning of the internal market; the opportunities and challenges arising for competition policy as a result of ongoing technological development; mergers and cartels investigations; enforcement of state aid policy; cooperation between competition authorities; and competition in specific sectors.
The DPP-Delegation stresses the importance of a strong competition policy in the EU. Competition helps to reinforce the single market. It removes barriers to trade in goods and services and it fosters innovation and competitiveness, which are fundamental to the goals of sustainable growth. However, the DPP decided to abstain on the end vote as it regrets the report’s proposals for a digital services tax and the Common Consolidated Corporate Tax Base (CCCTB).
