Objection pursuant to Rule 106: draft Commission implementing decision authorising the placing on the market of products containing, consisting of, or produced from genetically modified soybean DAS-44406-6, pursuant to Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council on genetically modified food and feed

FOR (+) In 2012, the same two companies as above submitted an application for the placing on the market of foods, food ingredients, and feed containing, consisting of, or produced from GM soybean DAS-44406-6. This draft measure also applies for a period of 10 years. This soybean is tolerant to glyphosate-based herbicides, (2,4-D) and glufosinate ammonium-based herbicides.
I voted in favour of the objection opposing the draft measures on the grounds that it exceeds the implementing powers provided for in the basic act. The risk assessment conducted by EFSA on both soybeans does not identify knowledge gaps and uncertainties and fails to assess toxicity, impact on immune system and the reproductive system. The objection reprimands the Commission authorisation procedure, stating it is inappropriate and contrary to the precautionary principle to continue to propose authorising new GMO varieties.

FOR (+) I voted in favour of this objection, as I believe that GM crops are detrimental to our long—term health and food security and will undermine our bio-diversity, on which agriculture depends.

FOR (+) I voted to in favour of this objection. The risk assessment conducted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) does not identify knowledge gaps and uncertainties and fails to assess the potential hazards of this genetically modified soybean’s toxicity, the impact on the immune system and the reproductive system.
